Gluten free Quinoa bars Giveaway

Have you noticed all those “high fiber good for you” breakfast bars in the breakfast food aisle in a super market? I usually get swayed by the “healthy looking wrapper” and pick one up. I glance at the list of ingredients. Usually those bars are made of corn syrup solids, some kind of grain, but not necessarily whole grain, Canola, Soybean, or Palm oil.  A couple of preservatives compete the list. How could THAT be healthy, I wonder. And walk away from the stand.

I recently came across NatureCrops. Their Nutrition Bars are different. Here is why:

They have no

  • Trans fat/hydrogenated oils,
  • Saturated fat,
  • Cholesterol.
  • Preservatives
  • Artificial colors or flavors
  • Gluten. The bars are gluten free and certified as such by Argentine Celiac Association

They do have

  • Organic Quinoa
  • 6 grams of protein per serving.
  • Only natural ingredients,
  • High percentage of fiber (20% of the daily value in one bar)
  • Low sodium

I noticed that Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is becoming more and more popular. One reason is that quite a few people start gluten free diets. To learn more about gluten and gluten-free diet, take a look at Katie’s post at Kitchen Stewardship  Katie Learns About Gluten.

I was on a gluten free (and dairy free) diet for over a year when I was nursing my daughter, who was allergic to wheat and dairy. I think I tried every single gluten free snack/cereal/breakfast bar I found in the Whole Foods market, which has a large selection of gluten free foods. There were no Quinoa bars available back then.

The other reason of Quinoa’s popularity is its multiple health benefits. Such as:

  • High protein. Quinoa can have as much as 22% protein, compared to common wheat at 14%, rye at 12% and brown rice at 7%.
  • Prebiotic. Quinoa acts as a prebiotic that feeds the microflora (good bacteria)
  • High quality of protein. (Amino Acids). Most grains are deficient in the amino acid ‘lysine’. Quinoa has an adequate quantity of lysine and therefore contains all the essential amino acids. the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization considers Quinoa equal to milk in quality of protein.
  • High in soluble dietary fiber. Quinoa does not only contain high levels of fiber in general but also soluble dietary fiber. This type of fiber helps to reduce the speed with which sugars flow into your bloodstream, and in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Vitamins and minerals. Quinoa has larger quantities of enzymes, minerals, magnesium, calcium, iron, vitamins and anti-oxidants than most other grains.

Quinoa is in fact not a grain; it is a seed related to the spinach family. When cooked, quinoa is light, fluffy, slightly crunchy and subtly flavored. It cooks and tastes like a grain, making it an excellent replacement for grains that are difficult to digest. If you have never tried Quinoa, try Jo-Lynne’s Fall Quinoa Pilaf.
