If you ever wonder what else you can do to get kids to eat their vegetables, consider having them watch other kids eating vegetables. This is a great concept and it works. Peer pressure works even when the kids are little.
I remember watching my one-year-old on the camera while she was at a daycare. She was eating green beans for lunch. The child who never touched green beans in her life was eating green beans on her own without any negotiations, games, or bribes. She saw other kids eating veggies and decided to finish her green beans too. I was not really happy with the daycare food since a lot of veggies came from cans, but I learned the lesson that kids influence other kids when it comes to food.
If your child does not go to daycare which always serves fresh vegetables (I was never able to find such a place), you can opt for a Copy-Kids DVD. This DVD series features kids having such a good time eating fruits and veggies, that when children watch it they want to join in. Copy-Kids is designed to get very young children excited about eating fruits and vegetables.
Even if your kids are not open to sitting on the couch watching a video of other kids eating bell peppers, you can run the video on the background while the kids are playing. As long as they catch a glimpse of a little boy or a girl biting on a cucumber, they are one step closer to trying a cucumber themselves. I would even go so far as to say that it is ok to watch this program on TV while kids are eating their dinner, lunch, or breakfast.
My kids loved watching kids on TV eating their vegetables, they even remembered the kids’ names. I was impressed that my preschoolers did not ask immediately to switch to their favorite cartoon, but went through the entire menu picking what vegetable they would like to watch next.
I have to add a disclaimer: this method alone might not work for every child. In this case, it would help to use additional incentives, such as preparing meals with kids, making vegetable juices, growing vegetables in the garden with kids, or even playing with food.
Copy Kids was approved by the USDA and added to their Education and Training Materials Database for pre-school nutrition.
Copy-Kids already helped many kids to get closer to a healthier lifestyle. You can buy a DVD or win one! In addition to a Copy-Kids DVD, one lucky reader will win a $25 Whole Foods gift card!
